While at ArtLab, Claire Chase collaborated with her students on two projects: Composing Women and Ears Wide Open and performed a solo concert, Density 2036, part vi.
Over the past decade Claire Chase has given the world premieres of hundreds of new works for the flute in performances throughout the Americas, Europe, and Asia, and she has championed new music throughout the world by building organizations, forming alliances, pioneering commissioning initiatives, and supporting educational programs that reach new audiences. She was named a MacArthur Fellow in 2012, and in 2017 was awarded the Avery Fisher Prize.
Density 2036, part vi is a concert of new music commissioned for flute and electronics featuring Claire Chase with Constellation Chor, a New York City-based vocal performance ensemble. The ArtLab concert marked the sixth year of Claire Chase’s Density 2036, a 23-year project to commission an entirely new body of repertory for solo flute each year until the 100th anniversary of Edgard Varèse’s groundbreaking 1936 flute solo, Density 21.5.
At ArtLab, Chase performed new works by composers Olga Neuwirth, Phyllis Chen, Pamela Z, Nathan David, Marcos Balter and Sarah Hennies. Guest performers were Constellation Chor, a vocal performance ensemble comprising composers, singers, dancers and actors, and founded by music-theatre and interdisciplinary choral composer Marisa Michelson. This annual concert was presented in collaboration with the Harvard Department of Music, where Chase is Professor of the Practice.
