About

Embracing the potential of an adaptable space, ArtLab is a blank canvas upon which artists from all disciplines can bring their visions to life. The driving concept for this cross-curriculum space for the arts is to provide space dedicated to art-making across different disciplines and forms of media.

ArtLab hosts a residency program for Harvard faculty & guest artists, supports interdisciplinary projects by Harvard students, and opens to the public several times a year to share work in development.

While the space is primarily conceived for art-making and production, a common “hub” at the building’s center provides a central place for gatherings and performances. The building is organized in a pinwheel configuration; the hub is framed by artists’ studios, a fabrication workshop, and media production studios. Artists use these surrounding spaces for audio recording, building sculptures, video editing, rehearsal, improvisation, and informal performance.

Opening in September 2019, the ArtLab also serves as an arts-based activator for the Allston campus. The building is designed to achieve net-zero energy and relies entirely on solar power produced via a roof-mounted photovoltaic array.
