A concert of new music commissioned for flute and electronics featuring Claire Chase with Constellation Chor, a New York City-based vocal performance ensemble. Composers Nathan Davis and Phyllis Chen will be present.
2019 marks the is sixth year of Claire Chase’s Density 2036, a 23-year project to commission an entirely new body of repertory for solo flute each year until the 100th anniversary of Edgard Varèse’s groundbreaking 1936 flute solo, Density 21.5.
At the ArtLab Claire Chase will perform new works by Olga Neuwirth, Phyllis Chen, Pamela Z, Nathan David, Marcos Balter and Sarah Hennies. Density 2036, part vi is presented in collaboration with the Harvard Department of Music.
Constellation Chor is a vocal performance ensemble comprising composers, singers, dancers, and actors, and was founded by music-theatre and interdisciplinary choral composer Marisa Michelson. The ensemble performs internationally and in New York City, and has expanded organically into the NYC new music community, most recently collaborating with the New York Philharmonic at David Geffen Hall, Lincoln Center.
Claire Chase, Harvard Professor of the Practice of Music, is a soloist, collaborative artist, curator, and advocate for new and experimental music. Over the past decade she has given the world premieres of hundreds of new works for the flute in performances throughout the Americas, Europe, and Asia, and she has championed new music throughout the world by building organizations, forming alliances, pioneering commissioning initiatives, and supporting educational programs that reach new audiences. She was named a MacArthur Fellow in 2012, and in 2017 was awarded the Avery Fisher Prize.
