Join Liz Lerman, a choreographer, performer, writer, and educator, at ArtLab for a special work in progress as she embarks on a new Harvard University Committee on the Arts (HUCA) commission. The new performance, “My Body is a Library,” will be a dance-based public artwork that explores how we create categories, unpack nomenclature, and uphold oral histories and traditions.
This public event is an excellent opportunity to learn about Lerman’s research process as she begins creating a new performance for public spaces. During the residency at ArtLab, Liz will be joined by creative collaborators Adesola Akinleye, Will Bond, Erin Donohue, Paloma McGregor, Ruby Morales, Alex Nelson, Sven Ortel, Elisa Garcia-Radcliffe, Angelina Ramirez, and Darron L. West.
Liz Lerman has cultivated generations of artists, focusing on dance as an agent for social change and community engagement. Her leadership in the arts has been recognized with a Guggenheim Fellowship, a MacArthur “Genius Grant,” and a Jacob’s Pillow Dance Award. In 2019, Lerman was an artist in residence at ArtLab.
This public event is a part of ArtsThursdays, a university-wide initiative supported by the Harvard University Committee on the Arts (HUCA). Messy Beginnings is a commission of the Harvard University Committee on the Arts and was made possible with the support of the Johnson-Kulukundis Family President’s Fund for Arts at Harvard University.
The event is free and open to all, but RSVP is requested. Doors will open at 5:45 pm.
