This public rehearsal is a window into the development of Proxies, a transdisciplinary dance theatre production at the intersection of performance, computation, and information design. Drawing on research in data privacy, loneliness, and ethics of care, Ilya Vidrin and Partnering Lab provoke the audience to consider not only the limits of what can be captured through technology but also how the fidelity of what is captured may be compromised when moving across kinesthetic, computational, visual, and musical representations. Dr. Ilya Vidrin (ArtLab artist-in-residence 2020) is a multidisciplinary artist, educator, and researcher at the intersection of performing arts, ethics, and interactive media. Born into a refugee family in the U.S., Ilya’s work interrogates the complex ethics of human interaction, including empathy, cultural competence, and social responsibility. His doctoral work focused on the underlying psychology and philosophy of partnering. Dr. Vidrin is an assistant professor of creative practice research at Northeastern University, core faculty in the Institute for Experience Robots, and director of the Partnering Lab, a research platform for investigating embodied ethics.

This ArtLab project brings together a team of collaborators, including multi-instrumentalists Eric Seligman and Melanie Hsu; Ilya Vidrin, Artistic Director; Steven Geofrey, Design and Data Visualization; and six professional dancers. The development of this project is also supported by the Knight Foundation, The Boston Foundation, and Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, where it will premiere in 2026.
