Dr. Louisa Penfold, Co-Chair of Arts and Learning at Harvard Graduate School of Education (HGSE), returns for the final of four studio workshops at ArtLab with her HGSE course “Contemporary Art in Early Childhood Education.”

Student participants explore the potential of modern and contemporary art in young children’s learning through hands-on experimentation with art media, including paint, cardboard, light, plastic, clay, and sound. Through studio workshop activities, students investigate the possibilities of New Materialism in creative learning – a theoretical orientation that positions materials and architectural spaces as active forces in knowledge production.

Dr. Penfold is a lecturer and faculty co-chair of Arts and Learning at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. Her research and practice focus on contemporary art, early childhood, and play across schools, museums, and public spaces.

This academic program is not open to the public.
